Japan's Suzuki Forced to Withdraw from World Baseball Classic Due to Injury

It is unfortunate that the Chicago Cubs’ Japanese outfielder Seiya Suzuki will be unable to compete in the upcoming World Baseball Classic due to an injury. Suzuki was expected to make a strong impression in the tournament, which opens on March 8 and runs until March 21. Nippon Professional baseball made it official with their statement on Tuesday, confirming his absence from the tournament. Even though he won’t be able to give his performance on top of his game, everyone is wishing for a speedy recovery so he can get back out there and play for Japan in any future events.

When Ichiro Suzuki recently collaborated with the Cubs to join their training program in Arizona, the Japanese officials were curious about his left oblique injury. Generally referred to as a side strain, this health complication is a common cause of abdominal and lower-back pain that can be managed with rest and physical therapy. Fortunately, it did not deter Suzuki from pursuing his goals with the Cubs: He’s looking forward to potential new opportunities to help him grow. As he trains hard in Arizona alongside other players, hopefully the injury does not impede his progress.

Ichiro Suzuki’s absence from the 2017 World Baseball Classic and the Tokyo Olympics of 2020 will surely leave a vacancy on Japan’s roster. The venerable outfielder gained many fans throughout his illustrious career, and earned himself plenty of accolades through his efforts. Fortunately, Hanshin Tigers outfielder Koji Chikamoto has been proposed as a potential replacement for Suzuki. While the “Marquee Player” won’t be easily replaced, those teammates still have an opportunity to win it all under their new teammate and amidst these difficult times. With his addition, they will be looking to reclaim their title once again and continue the celebration of their beloved national pastime in spectacular fashion.
