The practice session day for the Mercedes was a good and sad one because Lewis Hamilton hit the fastest lap time at the Monza track. Still, on the other hand, their debut F1 driver, Kimi Antonelli, ended up crashing in the first 10th minute of his debut practice session run.
Even after the crash in the debut practice session, Mercedes announced Kimi to be their 2nd driver alongside George Russell for the 2025 F1 season.
It was a difficult day for all the F1 drivers at Monza’s newly reformed track that said to give more grip but also going to degrade the tire quicker than it used to be. The weather is also one of the challenges at Monza right now, as the temperature can go up to 33 degrees, which is quite a lot for the F1 drivers who already get so much heat from their super-engine F1 cars.
Mercedes Debut Driver Kimi Antonelli’s Statement on His Crash At Monza
Just after Kimi Antonelli crashed, Toto Wolf asked him if he was alright, and in reply, Kimi said sorry for the crash, but Toto was more concerned about his condition. However, he is going to replace Lewis Hamilton in the Practice Race 3 at Monza.
What is Kimi’s statement after the practice session exit?
First FP1 done, It was quite a big one, around 52g, Really sorry to the team and George for making them work afterwards. Just a mistake by my side, just pushing a bit too much for the conditions and I should have built the run a bit more progressively.
But definitely a lesson learned for next time. But I’m still really thankful to the team for making this possible, and still great to see all the tifosi out there, and to get the first laps with all the drivers on track.
“I’m not feeling super well at the moment, I’m just going to go back and try to rest and try to focus for the rest of the weekend, because there’s still some races to go [in Formula 2] and we’re going to still try and get a good result.

What is Kimi’s statement About Him Being 2nd Driver For Mercedes In the 2025 F1 Season?
It is an amazing feeling to be announced as a Mercedes works driver alongside George for 2025. Reaching F1 is a dream I’ve had since I was a small boy; I want to thank the team for the support they’ve given me in my career so far and the faith they’ve shown in me. I am still learning a lot, but I feel ready for the opportunity. I’m also really excited to become George’s teammate. He came through the team’s junior programme just like myself and is someone I have a huge amount of respect for.
What Did Toto Wolf Said About Kimi After He Crashed At Monza Circuit?
He’s a rookie, he’s very young, we are prepared to invest into his future, I think a strong driver needs to recover from these things and cope with the pressure.
You have all these shenanigans around you in Monza: Italian kid that’s been hired, first time in a Mercedes, and that must be a heavy burden. But if he wants to be a champion one day he needs to cope with that, and I have no doubt that he can and he will.
“[The crash has] zero effect [on our opinion of him],” “Most important is to hire based on ability, and an FP1 that’s gone wrong is not the reason why you decide for or against a driver.”
