Singaporean shuttler Loh Kean Yew started his men’s singles match against the in-form Dane Anders Antonsen with brilliance, clinching the first game 21-17. Antonsen, ranked 10th in the world and a semi-finalist in the recent World Championships, struggled to find his footing in the match. Loh continued his dominance by securing the second game 21-12, avenging his loss to Antonsen in last month’s Korea Open final. As the seventh seed, Loh now awaits the winner of the clash between Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen and Wang Tzu Wei in the quarter-finals.
In women’s singles, three-time world champion Carolina Marin delivered a stellar performance as she comfortably defeated Gao Fang Jie from the People’s Republic of China with scores of 21-9, 21-16. Marin, the Spanish sixth seed, swiftly wrapped up the first game with a streak of six consecutive points. The second game followed a similar pattern, with Gao briefly leading at one point before Marin secured the match in just 42 minutes. Marin, the 2016 Olympic champion, is set to face the Republic of China’s fourth seed, Tai Tzu Ying, in her next match.
These victories highlight the exceptional skills and determination of Loh Kean Yew and Carolina Marin as they advance in the BWF China Open 2023, aiming for further success in the tournament.
