Indian badminton athletes HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen have displayed exceptional performances at the BWF World Badminton Championships 2023 held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Both players secured victories in the men’s singles category on Monday, showcasing their remarkable skills on the global stage.
Ranked 9th worldwide, HS Prannoy faced a formidable opponent in Finland’s Kalle Koljonen, who holds the 57th position in the global rankings. The initial game was closely contested, with the score tied at 22-all. However, Prannoy’s proficiency and composure proved decisive as he secured the lead. He continued his dominance in the second game, emerging victorious with scores of 24-22 and 21-10 after a 43-minute match. This victory further cemented Prannoy’s 3-0 record against Koljonen in their head-to-head encounters.
Lakshya Sen, the Commonwealth Games champion and bronze medallist at the 2021 world championships, exhibited his command in his opening match. He secured a convincing win against Mauritius’ Georges Julien Paul, who holds the 111th global ranking. Sen’s authoritative performance highlighted his court prowess as he secured the victory with scores of 21-12 and 21-7. Sen maintained his strong record against Paul.
Unfortunately, the Indian mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and N Sikki Reddy faced a tough challenge and were eliminated from the competition. They engaged in a closely contested match against the Scottish duo of Adam Hall and Julie Macpherson, ultimately falling short with a final score of 21-14, 20-22, and 21-18.
Kidambi Srikanth, however, faced an early exit from the championship. He was defeated by Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in the opening round, with scores of 21-14 and 21-14.
The spotlight now turns to PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, as she prepares to kick off her campaign in the second round against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara. With a first-round bye, Sindhu is poised to bring her competitive spirit to the tournament and strive for success in the upcoming matches.
