Noah Syndergaard Designated for Assignment by Cleveland Guardians After Tough Season

Cleveland Guardians’ pitcher Noah Syndergaard’s tenure with the team has come to an early end as he was designated for assignment following Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays. The decision was made after Syndergaard gave up five earned runs, including three home runs, during the series finale, which saw Cleveland lose to the Blue Jays in 11 innings. Despite his struggles, Manager Terry Francona acknowledged Syndergaard’s frustrations.

This season has proven to be challenging for Syndergaard, who has struggled with a 6.50 ERA while playing for both Los Angeles and Cleveland. The right-hander was acquired by the Guardians in a trade involving Amed Rosario just ahead of the August 1 Trade Deadline. The move aimed to address the team’s rotation issues due to injuries to key players like Shane Bieber, Triston McKenzie, and Cal Quantrill.

Syndergaard’s struggles have persisted even after joining the Guardians, except for a quality start against the Dodgers in late August. With a 5.40 ERA over six starts, he faced difficulties in locating his pitches and giving up hard contact. This stands in contrast to his previous All-Star performances with the Mets, where he earned the nickname “Thor” for his dominant presence on the mound.

Injuries, including Tommy John surgery in 2020, have impacted Syndergaard’s performance, leading to a struggle to regain his former prowess. Describing his pitching as feeling like “ice skates,” Syndergaard expressed his frustration after a challenging outing against the Reds in mid-August. His designation for assignment marks a significant turning point in his career with the Guardians.
