Artur Beterbiev became the light heavyweight champion after his last weekend win over Dmitry Bivol. However, accepting Artur Beterbiev as the undisputed champ despite getting a majority decision victory is not what most of the boxing community thinks. In fact, they labeled the victory of Artur Beterbiev a “Boxing Robbery.” The CompuBox numbers showed everyone how close the historic boxing match was as Russia’s Dmitry Bivol landed just 5 more punches than Artur Beterbiev. One judge called the fight 114 a piece, and the rest of the two favored Artur Beterbiev with 116-112 and 115-113.
Stats showed that Bivol connected more jabs than Beterbiev, landing 58 to his counterpart’s 47, whereas Beterbiev outclassed the Russian on power punches 90 to 84. The score of 116-112 ignited criticism of the scoring, and Dmitry Bivol’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, and rivals’ promoter, Frank Warren, shared similar opinions. The latter is even rooting to get a rematch done later to settle the debate.
“In one of the biggest fights of our generation, the most important fight of Dmitry Bivol’s life, you give him four rounds? It’s disgusting. You heard Beterbiev’s corner in the 10th round: They told him he had to knock him out. “Top Rank knew he’d lost. I’m absolutely baffled and disgusted. I don’t want to disrespect Artur Beterbiev. That judge should never work again. Four rounds [to Bivol] in a fight of this magnitude is disgusting.”
Eddie Hearn said
“I gave it to Bivol by a couple of rounds. That score of 8-4 is beyond ridiculous. Everyone around that ring thought Bivol had won it by at least two rounds. There should be a rematch because it was such a quality fight. Brilliant skills in there by Bivol, his jab was superb. Artur the last couple of rounds was told it was sink or swim. The score 8-4 was a joke. It’s terrible when you get a fight like that and it ends in controversy,”
