Afghanistan vs Bangladesh, 1st ODI: AM Ghazanfar picked a 6-fer as Afghanistan won the first ODI of the three by 92 runs.
Afghanistan skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss and chose to bat first. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sediqullah Atal started the innings for their team but couldn’t continue for long as Bangladesh pacers ripped the top order apart, with Afghanistan 4 down for just 35 runs. It was skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Gulbadin Naib who partnered for a brief before Gulbadin’s wicket that made Afghanistan put some more runs on the board; however, it was the partnership of Shahidi and veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi that made the batting look easy as both batters scored their fifty with Nabi hitting 84 runs before getting caught at deep square leg. Afghanistan’s innings ended with 235 runs on the board in 49.4 overs.
Chasing 236 runs, Bangladesh started it with a boundary. It was Ghazanfar who picked up the first wicket for his team as Tanzid Hasan got out on 3. Bangladesh hit back with a brief partnership between Soumya Sarkar and Najmul Hossain Shanto. Both batters played the field easily as Bangladesh crossed the 50-run mark. Azmatullah Omarzai dismissed Soumya Sarkar, but skipper Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz kept shortening the run gap as Bangladesh crossed the 100-run mark inside 20 overs. With the way those two were going, it looked like an easy win for Bangladesh until Nabi got Shanto’s wicket. After that, Ghazanfar wreaked havoc as the Bangladesh side was bowled out for 143 runs in 34.3 overs.

Quite happy about the performance. It was good and looking forward to the next two games. (On if he thought the score was enough) Honestly, yes. I was believing. He (Nabi) was really positive. Our discussion was that if we scored 220, it would be a good enough score. 236 was a good target here and the bowlers then did their job (smiles). The way the spinners bowled was brilliant. (On Ghazanfar) He is a special talent. Good kid, good future for Afghanistan. I trust him and that is why he is in the team and playing. First few overs also he bowled well. After the no ball, I asked him what he was doing and asked him to not do it again (laughs). (On Gurbaz and Afghanistan’s depth) I am very happy. We have a lot of youngsters. We have other options available as back-ups. It is unfortunate that Ibrahim is not with us – he is our best player as an opener. Gurbaz was also injured (today) and hopefully he recovers (for the next game).

We started very well. For 15-20 overs, we bowled really well. In the middle, we could not execute. Nabi batted brilliantly. I didn’t think we needed to attack more (with the ball). The wicket had low bounce (and we had to stick to our plans). My wicket made the difference in today’s game. I was the set batter and after that Miraz, even Soumya, we scored 30-40s. In these conditions, you have to bat longer. Afghanistan always have mystery spinners, everyone bowled really well and he (Ghazanfar) bowled really well. The preparation was brilliant but today was not our day, hopefully we can come back strongly in the next game.
