Afghanistan’s Historic Victory Over South Africa

Afghanistan vs South Africa 2nd ODI Result

Afghanistan made history with their biggest win in ODI cricket, defeating South Africa by 177 runs in Sharjah. Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s seventh ODI century and Azmatullah Omarzai’s unbeaten 86* set the stage for a dominant performance. Rashid Khan and Nangeyalia Kharote shared nine wickets to seal the victory.

Strong Start by Afghanistan

Opting to bat first on a good track, Afghanistan started cautiously. Gurbaz then accelerated, taking on South African pacers Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger. He reached his half-century just after the drinks break and continued to dominate, reaching his century with a sweep to deep square leg. Although Burger soon dismissed him, his knock laid a solid foundation.

Late Surge by Azmatullah

Azmatullah Omarzai provided a late surge, scoring 86* off just 50 balls. His powerful hitting in the final overs helped Afghanistan post a formidable total of 311/4.

South Africa’s Struggle

South Africa began positively, with Tony de Zorzi and Temba Bavuma putting on a 73-run stand. However, once Azmatullah broke through, the wickets began to tumble. Rashid Khan’s double-wicket and Kharote’s impressive spell left South Africa reeling. Rashid celebrated his birthday with a five-wicket haul, while Kharote finished with career-best figures 4/26.

Match Summary

  • Afghanistan: 311/4 in 50 overs (Rahmanullah Gurbaz 105, Azmatullah Omarzai 86*, Rahmat Shah 50; Lungi Ngidi 1-50)
  • South Africa: 134 all out in 34.2 overs (Temba Bavuma 38, Tony de Zorzi 31; Rashid Khan 5-19, Nangeyalia Kharote 4-26)

Afghanistan’s comprehensive win secured the series and marked a significant achievement in their cricketing journey.

What Captain Said In Post Match Interview

Congratulations to the whole nation for this fantastic series win. Everyone in the team and throughout the country will be very happy with this win. I think all of them were good, the way Gurbaz started and then the partnership with Rahmat, and then Azmat took the momentum away from them. They started well but I knew when the spinners come on, they will deliver for me. That happened with Rashid and Kharote.

Hashmatullah Shahidi

For the openers, the job was to lay the foundation. We started well with Tony and myself, but then the spinners came in. Overall, not a good enough performance, not a good showing for us. We take the learnings and try to be as positive as we can, there is another opportunity for the guys to show what they can do out here. Overall, we need to be better. I think Omarzai played well, put us under pressure and the foundation was shared by Gurbaz. We had two guys in our team who got in and laid the foundation, but couldn’t carry on.
