India, after their victory over Sri Lanka in their second match in the Super 4 stage, qualified for the finals of the Asia Cup 2023, and their opponent is yet to be decided. Either Sri Lanka or Pakistan would be the finalist alongside India, and that would be decided today as Pakistan would fight with Sri Lanka for the second finalist spot. India defeated Sri Lanka by 41 runs in a low-scoring thriller as the young all-rounder Dunith Wellalage’s exceptional performance with the ball stopped India for just 213 runs. The 20-year-old all-rounder picked five crucial wickets to strengthen Sri Lanka’s hold against India, but Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling spell did it for India, as the left-arm Chinaman bowler picked four wickets in the match that helped restrict Sri Lanka to 172 runs.
For both Pakistan and Sri Lanka, this is a do-or-die situation to qualify for the final spot in the Asia Cup 2023. Pakistan can qualify for the finals only if they manage to win the match against Sri Lanka; there are no alternatives available for them, whereas in the case of Sri Lanka, either they can qualify for the finals by winning the match against Pakistan or if rain stops play, as Sri Lanka has a higher net run rate than Pakistan, even if the rain plays spoilsport, they would be qualifying for the finals. Bangladesh are already out of the finals race as they lost both of their Super 4 stage matches, and their remaining match, which is against India, will not mean anything for them other than improving their winning percentage against India.
Pakistan and Sri Lanka would be hoping to qualify for the finals for the second consecutive time in the Asia Cup, and the finalists of the Asia Cup 2022 would be seen in action against each other from the afternoon onwards.
