SLK vs AW: The Faf du Plessis-led Saint Lucia Kings lifted the CPL trophy for the first time in 11 years after defeating the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the final of the CPL 2024.
Saint Lucia Kings won the toss and elected to bowl first; the decision to bowl first in the finals of the CPL 2024 paid off as Khary Pierre picked up the wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the first over of the match after the first dismissal. Saint Lucia Kings’ bowlers maintained the pressure on Amazon Warriors. Shai Hope and Moeen Ali tried reviving their team from the early shock but failed to build a partnership as Roston Chase got rid of Shai Hope in the 8th over. Wickets kept falling as under the score of 100; Amazon Warriors lost 7 wickets. It was Dwaine Pretorius who scored a crucial 25 runs in the lower order to take his team to the score of 138/8 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing the target of 139 runs, Saint Lucia King’s start wasn’t good as Johnson Charles got out early in the powerplay, and then skipper Faf du Plessis got caught behind the wicket. Amazon Warriors’ bowlers did the return and picked up more wickets to build pressure on Saint Lucia Kings as Faf du Plessis led SLK to lose four wickets under 57 runs. Roston Chase and Aaron Jones started slow and stabilized the innings, and once they set their eyes, they launched a counter-attack. Aaron Jones played his innings of the tournament and scored 48 runs off 31 balls. Roston Chase accompanied him as both led their team to a 6 wicket victory in the finals.

CPL 2024, Final: SLK vs AW| Captains’ Corner
“This franchise has been looking to get that trophy for a long time. Against this opposition, in front of a big crowd – there’s no bigger place to play a final… I would have liked it a bit easier to be honest! I was very happy with the bowling. It was a decent decision [at the toss]. We were very positive to get that score. In our minds, we wanted to play very positively… Just two or three overs made a really big difference. The ball starts to get wet. For Jones and Chase to absorb the pressure was incredible… If you look throughout the competition, there are no superstars here.”
Faf du Plessis(Saint Lucia Kings’ captain) said post-match
“We didn’t start well with the bat. We knew dew was going to come… Tough luck today. I also want to congratulate St Lucia Kings. If we batted better, we could have had 170 or 180. That is good score on this pitch, especially with the spinners we have. Just one over took it away. We like to keep Shepherd as late as we can. The other batters had a lot of dot balls. They didn’t try and rotate strike. I was happy with Shephy; we needed him for the last four or five overs. Things were going really well; they needed 13 an over… We were putting pressure on them. It could be one more dismissal, and you never know.”
Imran Tahir(Amazon Warriors captain) said post-match
