AW vs BR: David Miller’s fifty went in vain, as the Guyana Amazon Warriors won the 27th match of the CPL T20 by 47 runs.
After winning the toss, Barbados Royals decided to bowl first; the decision paid the dividend as Rahmanullah Gurbaz, after hitting a six in the first over, got caught at the slip. Azam Khan and Shai Hope took the innings forward, and both batters looked in great touch, though Azam Khan got out after scoring 26 runs. Shai Hope continued playing his innings and built a partnership with the left-hand batter; both were unstoppable as beating continued from both ends. Both batters scored fifty and ensured a big total for their team. Contributions from the lower-order batters helped Barbados Royals put 219/8 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing the massive target of 220 runs, the Barbados Royals start wasn’t good as Kadeem Alleyne got dismissed early in the powerplay, and then Alick Athanaze got out after scoring 8 runs. Amazon Warriors’ spinners started troubling the batters, and the bowlers shattered the top order. Amazon Warriors captain Imran Tahir led the charge and picked up Rivaldo Clarke’s wickets and opposite skipper Rovman Powell. David Miller, who was playing his 500th T20 match, fought hard and scored 71 runs for his team, but that wasn’t enough to win the match as Guyana Amazon Warriors won the match by 47 runs.

It was a big game for us. The boys played really well. They set up a nice total for us to defend. It was difficult after 12 overs and the dew came in. We wanted to bat first and wanted to put a big score on the board. Really well played to Hetmyer, Hope and Azam, who gave a good start. (Critical moments they won) Moeen bowled well, we kept taking wickets. We bowled really well as a bowling group. Proud of the boys. Nice to have those guys (Moeen, Motie, Junior Sinclair) in your group. This pitch also offered a bit of spin but the way our batters played – it was nice to see how Hetmyer and Hope played.
Imran Tahir(Guyana Amazon Warriors Captain) said post-match
Credit has to be given to them – they came out firing and totally outplayed us. (On Miller) To play 500 games, you must be doing something right. He has been a good player not just for South Africa but for all the teams he has played for around the world. Nice that he is getting back into form (ahead of the playoffs). We know what we are going to go with in the playoffs (with respect to our playing eleven). Winning builds confidence but we know not to get too down with a few losses. The real business starts next week (in the playoffs).
