Once again, Niroshan Dickwella is suspended due to failing the doping test during the Lanka Premier League, which is given by every player who participates in the league so that cricketers will stay away from harmful substances.
“The suspension is effective immediately and will remain in place until further notice,” stated an SLC media release.
“The test, which was conducted by the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency (SLADA) during the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2024, is part of SLC’s ongoing commitment to maintaining the integrity of the sport.
“This initiative, undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, is aimed at ensuring that cricket remains free from the influence of prohibited substances.
“SLC, together with the Ministry of Sports and SLADA, conducts these tests during domestic tournaments randomly to safeguard the sport against anti-doping violations.”
Sri Lanka Board said
Dickwella and some other players of Sri Lanka were suspended before when they were on the England tour during the COVID-19 time, but once he was charged, it became a big concern for the Sri Lankan Cricket Board.
Dickwella’s suspension has surprised many, given his recent selection for the Sri Lankan T20I squad against Bangladesh. Despite his past disciplinary issues, including a ban for breaching bio-bubble protocols in 2021, he had been given another chance to represent his country. However, this latest incident has shadowed his future in the sport.
The reasons behind Dickwella’s doping violation remain unclear. While the specific substance involved has not been disclosed, the suspension indicates a severe breach of anti-doping regulations. It is a reminder that even top-level athletes are not immune to making mistakes that can have far-reaching consequences.
Dickwella’s indefinite suspension is a significant blow to Sri Lankan cricket. He has been a valuable team member for many years, contributing significantly with his batting and wicketkeeping. His absence will be felt, and how the team will cope remains to be seen.
As the investigation into Dickwella’s doping violation continues, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board must take swift and decisive action. The integrity of the sport depends on upholding strict anti-doping regulations and holding athletes accountable for their actions.
