Former left-handed batter of the Indian team Gautam Gambhir praised Rohit Sharma after the latter crossed 10,000 ODI runs. Rohit Sharma achieved this milestone while playing against Sri Lanka in the Super 4 stage of the Asia Cup 2023. The 36-year-old right-handed batter is the fastest opener to reach 8,000 ODI runs and has now crossed the 10,000-run mark in ODIs. Gautam Gambhir revealed that the transition of Rohit Sharma from a middle-order batter to an opener was because of the legendary Indian captain MS Dhoni, who advised the batter to bat as an opener, and it benefited him massively.
Rohit Sharma, since his debut in 2007, has gone through ups and downs in his career, but it was MS Dhoni who kept supporting him in his struggling phase and advised him to bat up in the order. Since then, Rohit has transformed into the Hitman that we now know. Gautam Gambhir, while giving credit to MS Dhoni, said
“Scoring 10,000 runs was not easy for him. Saw many ups and downs. Having seen that phase, Rohit, as a captain, will back youngsters who go through a difficult period. Rohit Sharma is Rohit Sharma today because of MS Dhoni,”

Gambhir wants Rohit to play a role like MS Dhoni, who groomed upcoming players during his tenure, and that’s what Rohit has to do as a captain of the Indian team. Rohit Sharma is the sixth Indian player to cross the 10,000-run mark in ODIs.
“MS backed him continuously in his initial struggling phase. If he wants to leave a legacy behind, not in terms of runs but as a captain, a lot will depend on how he backs the young players. It will be interesting to see how he grooms the upcoming players,”
