“BCCI were not prepared for Virat Kohli’s resignation from test captaincy”- Saurav Ganguly
Indian cricket legend and former BCCI president Saurav Ganguly recently revealed the reason behind Virat Kohli’s resignation as captain of the longest format of cricket. Saurav Ganguly, in a shocking revelation on Virat’s stepping down from test captaincy, said that the BCCI never wanted him to step down from the test cricket captaincy and it was his personal decision to leave the Indian test team captaincy. The BCCI was not prepared for such an incident, and they found Rohit Sharma as the best alternative at that time. That’s why the captaincy of the test cricket was given to Rohit Sharma.
The uproar to reinstate Virat Kohli as the test captain of the Indian cricket team started after India lost in the WTC final (2021–23) against Australia; the latter beat the former team by 209 runs and lifted their first ICC WTC mace. After Team India’s loss in the WTC final again, questions on Rohit Sharma‘s test captaincy approach were raised by fans and the cricket community, and the demand to bring back Virat Kohli as captain of the test team started getting a lot of air. The question regarding the reason behind Virat Kohli’s resignation from the test captaincy was also asked to Saurav Ganguly when he was giving an interview to Aaj Tak, to which he replied.
“BCCI were not prepared for Virat Kohli leaving the Test captaincy. It was unexpected for us also after the South Africa tour. Only Virat Kohli can reveal why he left the captaincy. There is no point talking about this now because Virat Kohli left the Test captaincy. Selectors had to appoint an India captain. And Rohit was the best option at that time,”
Saurav Ganguly said.
Virat Kohli stepped down from the red-ball cricket format in January 2022 after Team India’s test defeat in South Africa.
