The 4th Test between India and England began at Old Trafford with India invited to bat first by England’s skipper, Ben Stokes, after winning the toss. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings for India. Initially, England’s pacers troubled the batters as the ball was doing movement, but as the match progressed, both batters read the conditions well and started scoring runs, building a 78-run partnership for the 1st wicket until the end of the 1st session. It was in the 30th over when Chris Woakes found the edge of KL Rahul’s bat, and the catch was taken at slip by Zak Crawley to get the first breakthrough. KL Rahul scored 46 runs before getting out.

Sai Sudharsan came to the crease and partnered with Yashasvi Jaiswal for a brief, as the latter scored his fifty and got out on 58 runs meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan spent time on the crease and started moving his feet brilliantly though England skipper Ben Stokes almost trapped him but the wicket-keeper Jamie Smith dropped the catch as the left-handed batter survived but the Indian skipper Shubman Gill wasn’t that lucky as a delivery bowled by Ben Stokes came sharp into the wickets and Shubman Gill while trying to leave the ball missed it completely. The ball hit the pads, and the Umpire lifted his finger to call it a wicket.

Rishabh Pant and Sai Sudharsan stabilized the innings after the tea break and took India’s score past 200, but while trying to play a reverse sweep, Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot and the batter was assisted to the dug-out as he was declared retired hurt. Ravindra Jadeja came to the crease, meanwhile Sai Sudharsan hit his maiden test fifty, but Ben Stokes took his wicket with a bouncer as India finished the day 1 with 264 runs on the board at the loss of 4 wickets.
