Shubman Gill and Axar Patel during a match

India vs England, 1st ODI: India won the first ODI of the three-match series to take the lead 1-0.

After winning the toss, England’s captain, Jos Buttler, decided to bat first at VCA stadium. Openers Phil Salt and Ben Duckett gave their team an explosive start. In fact, Phil Salt hit Harshit Rana for 26 runs in the 6th over of the match to take the score of England to 52 runs. Ben Duckett was scoring from the other end, but in the 8th over, while trying to take a third run, a miscommunication between the batters helped India get the first breakthrough as Phil Salt got out on 43 runs. In the next over, Harshit Rana picked two wickets, and Ben Duckett and Harry Brook were dismissed. Joe Root and Jos Buttler partnered briefly, but Ravindra Jadeja trapped Joe Root in his spin. Jos Buttler scored fifty but couldn’t go beyond 52 runs as Axar Patel picked his wicket.

The only significant contribution after that came from Jacob Bethell, who scored fifty before getting out. England were bowled out for 248 runs in 47.4 overs.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal started the chase, with the left-handed batter getting out after scoring 15 runs. In the next over, Rohit Sharma got dismissed on 2 runs as both openers got out in powerplay. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer handled the situation well and built the partnership for the 3rd wicket. Both batters were in good touch, and Iyer scored fifty in just 30 balls, which took India’s score to 113 runs. Unfortunately, he got out after scoring 59 runs, but Axar Patel managed the pace afterward and batted well with Shubman Gill. Both of them scored their fifties before getting out.

With the loss of 6 wickets, India reached the target in 38.4 overs to win the first ODI.

India vs England, 1st ODI: Captains’ Corner

Disappointed not to win the game. Thought we got off to a fantastic start in the powerplay. Openers got off to a great start but to lose four wickets was frustrating. Extra 40-50 runs would have been crucial. [Losing wickets in clusters] That is not how we want to play. We want to put the opposition under pressure and keep the momentum. [A bit of predictability with fast bowling?] Guys started well, they were 20 for 2. At that point the game’s in the balance, if we could have found a way to take a wicket there, but Gill and Iyer put on a good partnership.

Jos Buttler(England’s Captain) said post-match

“Pretty happy because we knew we were coming after a long time to this format. We wanted to quickly regroup and understand what is to be done. Didn’t start off well with their openers putting pressure on us, but the way we came back was superb. This is a slightly longer format where you have time to come back. When things start to go away from you, it doesn’t mean it will keep going away. Credit to the bowlers, everyone chipped in. It was important for us to keep us going, we took wickets at crucial time, the energy on the field was brilliant as well.
