Virat Kohli after scoring his fifty during a match

India vs. Pakistan: Virat Kohli scored his ton, and a team effort led India to their second win in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, beating Pakistan by six wickets.

After winning the toss, Pakistan’s skipper Mohammad Rizwan decided to bat first. Imam-ul-Haq and former skipper Babar Azam came out to open for their team. Both batters started well and showed control in their batting. In 8 overs, Pakistan’s score was 37, and at the start of the 9th over, Babar Azam hit Hardik Pandya for a boundary, but the all-rounder made a comeback and picked up the wicket of Babar Azam. In the 10th over, while trying to get a quick single, Imam-ul-haq got run out as Axar Patel hit the bull’s eye.

Saud Shakeel and skipper Mohammad Rizwan built the partnership to take Pakistan’s score to 148 runs, where the left-handed batter scored his fifty. In the 34th over, Azar Patel dismissed Mohammad Rizwan on 46 runs to break the partnership, and from there, India started pushing Pakistan on the back foot as wickets kept falling. In 49.4 overs, India bowled out Pakistan for 241 runs.

To chase the target of 242 runs, India started with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill; the right-handed batters tried giving a steady start to the team, with the skipper showing the intent to hit every loose delivery out of the boundary, but in the 5th over Shaheen Afridi made a comeback to sent Rohit Sharma back to the dug-out on 20 runs. Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill partnered after that to take the score to 100 runs; Gill got bowled by Abrar when he was 4 runs short of his fifty. Now, Virat and Shreyas Iyer calmed the situation and started closing the chase gap.

Virat scored his fifty as India was coming closer to winning. Iyer contributed 57 runs before getting out. When India needed 2 runs to win the game, Virat Kohli got a boundary to score his first century of the tournament against Pakistan, and India won the match by 6 wickets.

India vs Pakistan, Match 5th, ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Captains’ Corner

We started superbly with the ball. We knew the wicket could get slower but backed our experienced batters to go out there and get 240. Credit goes to Kuldeep, Axar, Jadeja who all have played a lot. Rizwan and Saud stitched a good stand, was important not to let the game drift. Not to forget how Shami, Hardik, Harshit bowled as well. It was a good performance from the entire unit. The boys understand what kind of job is required out of them. It’s tricky at times because not all will get a bowl.

Rohit Sharma(India’s Captain) said post-match

We won the toss but didn’t get the benefit. We wanted to get 280 but their bowlers did really well in the middle overs. When Saud and I were batting, we wanted to go deep. But our shot selection was bad and lost wickets, which is why we were kept to 240. Abrar gave us the wicket, but Kohli and Gill took the game far from us. We must improve our fielding. We made a lot of mistakes this match, they’ve repeated, hope to work on them going forward.
