BCCI secretary Jay Shah finally clarified whether the duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will participate in the Duleep trophy. As revealed, the two won’t be playing in the Duleep trophy. The BCCI president doesn’t think it is mandatory for the regular duo to participate in the domestic tournament as that will increase the chances of them getting injured while playing. Jay Shah gave the necessary credit to the domestic tournament as that’s where new talents get groomed to play in the international matches, but to manage the workload of India’s key players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, they are exempted from playing the Duleep trophy.
It’s a common practice around the world for Cricket boards to try to save their senior players for big tournaments or matches and exempt them from playing domestic tournaments. Jay Shah told the media to focus on the players who are participating in the domestic tournaments. For example, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are playing in the Buchi Babu tournament.
“Apart from them, everyone else is playing. You should appreciate that. One must note that Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer are playing in the Buchi Babu tournament.
Jay Shah said
Jay Shah mentioned that the Australian and English boards allow their senior players to skip domestic tournaments to be available for important international matches.
“We should not insist on players like Rohit and Virat to play in the Duleep Trophy. They will risk injury. If you have noticed, in Australia and England, every international player does not play domestic cricket. We have to treat the players with respect,”
