SFU vs SO: The San Francisco Unicorns continued their winning run with another victory over the Seattle Orcas in the 16th match of the MLC 2025.
Seattle Orcas skipper Heinrich Klaasen won the toss and decided to bowl first. Gerald Coetzee struck first by taking the wicket of Finn Allen in the first over of his spell. SFU skipper Matthew Short started his innings aggressively and continued hitting runs from his end. The skipper scored his fifty, and he got the support of Jake Fraser McGurk from the other end as both took the team’s score to 86 runs; Fraser McGurk got out after scoring 34 runs, followed by the skipper on 52 runs. Batters were dismissed early afterward, but Romario Shepherd provided stability to the lower order and scored a crucial fifty for his team. SFU ended its innings with 176 runs on the board at the end of 20 Overs.
Chasing the target of 177 runs, Seattle Orcas’ start was good; openers Shayan Jahangir and David Warner batted cautiously to put runs on the board in the powerplay. Jahangir was looking in good touch, but he got out after scoring 40 runs for his team. David Warner got out after that, and the Seattle Orcas batting line-up debacle started from there. Shimron Hetmyer fought hard to score 30 runs for his team and reduce the chase gap, but Haris Rauf picked up his wicket in the 18.2 overs. Seattle Orcas was bowled out for 144 runs as they remained winless so far in the league.

MLC, 2025, Match 16th: SFU vs SO| Captains’ Corner
First time I’ve heard that. So thanks for that. The boys are obviously up and about. We’ve had a great start to the tournament, only looking forward from here and on to the next game. [What pleased you the most about tonight’s win?] It’s a good question. I mean, the last few games we’ve played probably to our best ability, but tonight we’re probably a little bit off. I guess in those previous games, we’re so good at creating partnerships with the bat, really putting the other team under pressure, especially in those death overs.
Matthew Short(SFU Captain) said post-match
“We were quite happy with that. Maybe 10-20 runs too much, but we were quite happy to chase that down. [Generate batters form] It’s tough in this format, you generate too much form by going almost backwards, like playing like a wonder innings. You have to play the game quite positively, and hopefully, the wheels just turn. The only hope that you hold on to is if you’re hitting the ball nicely, which a lot of the guys are doing. We just keep finding fielders and keep finding ways to go out, and if the game goes against you, it’s part of it. So as long as we keep hitting the ball nicely, our mindsets are positive. Hopefully we will trip.
