ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is around the corner, and as always, cricket fans are waiting to see some exciting matches and cheer for their teams in this marquee tournament. For some players’ exceptional performances throughout the tournament, the ICC rewards them with the Player of the Series award. Here is a list of the players who have been bestowed with this award since the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007.

Shahid Afridi

Pakistan’s all-rounder Shahid Afridi was named player of the inaugural series of the T20 World Cup. He was contributing from both the ball throughout the tournament. Though India lifted the trophy by defeating Pakistan by five runs in the final, Shahid Afridi was named player of the series for his immense contribution to his team’s journey to the finals of the T20 World Cup 2007. 

Tillakaratne Dilshan

Former Sri Lankan batter Tillakaratne Dilshan was the winner of the Player of the Series award in the T20 World Cup 2009. His unbeaten 96 in the semi-final match against West Indies helped Sri Lanka put 158 runs on the scoreboard. Sri Lanka eventually emerged as the winners in the semis and faced Pakistan in the final, where they unfortunately lost to the runner-ups of the T20 World Cup 2007 by 8 wickets. 

Kevin Pietersen

Former England batter Kevin Pietersen was the player of the series in the T20 World Cup 2010. His batting in the top order helped England win matches against their opponents in the tournament. Ultimately, England won the final against Australia by seven wickets to win their first-ever ICC title. 

Shane Watson

Australia’s all-rounder Shane Watson was the player of the series in T20 World Cup 2012. The all-rounder was named player of the match in three consecutive matches in Australia, and his team qualified for the semi-finals, where they faced West Indies. The semi-finals didn’t go their way, and they lost the match by 74 runs. 

Virat Kohli

India’s Virat Kohli showed his best version in the T20 World Cup 2014, where the batter scored 319 runs in the six matches he played. He played a magnificent innings of 72 runs in the semi-finals against South Africa to chase the target of 173 runs to win the game by six wickets to reach the tournament finals. In the tournament finals, he scored 77 runs to take his team to a total of 130 runs, which Sri Lanka chased 17.5 overs to win the tournament. Though Sri Lanka won the match, Virat Kohli was named Player of the series.

After his great last season with the bat, Virat Kohli continued his fantastic form with the bat and rescued team India in the T20 World Cup 2016; in the knockout stage against Australia, he played a marvelous innings of 82 runs to take his team to victory due to which they ended up playing semi-finals against West Indies where they lost. Virat Kohli ended as the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 273 runs. 

David Warner

Australia’s batter, David Warner, was named Player of the Series for immensely contributing to the team’s success in the T20 World Cup 2021. The opening batter scored 289 runs, including three fifties in the tournament. Eventually, Australia lifted the T20 World title for the first time after defeating New Zealand in the final. 

Sam Curran

England’s all-rounder Sam Curran was the latest to add to the list of the Player of the Series awards as the left-handed batting all-rounder hugely contributed to his team’s winnings in the T20 World Cup 2022. England won their second ICC T20 title by defeating Pakistan in the finals, and Sam Curran was named Player of the series.
