Saika’s First Cricket Kit: A Gift from ‘Jhulu Di’

Saika's First Cricket Kit: A Gift from 'Jhulu Di'

Saika Ishaque is proving to be a revelation in the WPL, her five matches earning her the purple cap for having taken the most wickets. The 27-year-old left-arm spinner has been phenomenal with performances of six wickets for 6.16 runs and an economy rate of 5.16 in two matches, giving no room for the batsman to dominate. This is even more impressive considering both venues, DY Patil and Brabourne Stadiums, have been traditionally considered flat strips that do not favour bowlers. Ishaque’s showing has thus come as a much needed surprise to everyone watching the tournament and further underlines her potential to become one of the leading bowlers this season.

Saika’s impressive showing definitely put her front and center in helping MI get off to a strong start in the WPL. Against the Gujarat Giants, she seemed to be unbeatable, taking a wicket in every over while finishing with standout figures of 4-11. In the second game, Saika dismissed formidable players Sophie Devine and Disha Kasat while taking 2-26, giving her team an edge during their victory against RCB at CCI. With performances like this, it will be exciting to see what she has to offer in this inaugural season of the Mitsubishi Women’s Premier League.

Saika, the Purple Cap winner of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), has secured her place in history with her sheer determination and ambition to succeed. She shared her thoughts with TOI ahead of MI’s third game against Delhi Capitals at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday: ”It’s not that I didn’t even imagine being the highest wicket-taker after two matches in WPL; it feels good to wear the Purple Cap.” Her simple yet successful recipe for success revolves around one concept: bowler every ball as per her team’s plan and let luck do its part. Saika is an emblem of hardwork and dedication put into action, showing what can be accomplished when you focus on your dreams.

Saika, a talented cricketer hailing from the modest backgrounds of Park Circuit in Kolkata, has achieved a great amount due to the guidance and support of India’s renowned quick bowler Jhulan Goswami. It was Jhulan Goswami who provided Saika with her first ever cricket kit and acted as her mentor since her childhood days. Jhulan’s coaching has served Saika well and, last month at the Women’s Premier League auction, she was picked up by Mumbai Indians for just Rs 10 lakhs – testament to how much Jhulan has helped mould Saika into the sports person she is today. Saika herself admitted this when discussing Jhulan’s role in her career: “Jhulu di gave me my first cricket kit; she has guided and supported me since childhood. She has played a massive role in my career.”

When it comes to learning a craft, having the right teacher can be absolutely crucial. Such was the case for Bharattkashi, a left arm spinner for Mumbai Indians in the Women’s IPL. Having been taught by Shivsagar Singh, a former Bengal spinner himself, Bharattkashi has learnt how to bowl spin with confidence. Alongside her mentor and other coaches at MI such as Jhulan di and Harman di, Bharattkashi feels thoroughly supported in her pursuit of excellence. In particular, Harman di cheers her on when she bowls while their head coach Charlotte Edwards gives continuous words of encouragement – reminding Bharattkashi of how capable she is and that ultimately she will do well.

Saika dreamed of playing cricket for India ever since her father raised her on the sport. This dream was supported right up until his death 15 years ago, and now it appears to be within reach for this talented young cricketer. With a passionate determination, she is taking advantage of every opportunity that is presented to her such as the Womens Premier League T20 (WPL), from which she hopes to get the attention of selectors seeking exceptional talent for the India caps. To take her from ordinary to extraordinary, Saika only needs a little help from God, who she trusts will guide her steps in achieving this childhood dream fulfilled by a beloved parent’s support.
