AUS(W) vs SA(W): South Africa Women defeated Australia Women for the first time in the T20 World Cup match to reach the tournament finals for the second consecutive time.
South Africa’s skipper, Laura Wolvaardt, won the toss and chose to bowl first. South Africa’s Ayabonga Khaka was quick to strike and picked Grace Harris’ wicket in the first ball of his spell. Marizanne Kapp dismissed Georgia Wareham on the score of 5 as Australia was 2 down for 18 runs. Beth Mooney and skipper Tahlia McGrath built a partnership for a brief time, but Nonkululeko Mlaba dismissed the skipper McGrath on 27 runs. A spectacular run out of Beth Mooney led to the fall of a set batter; after that, Ellyse Perry and Phoebe Litchfield partnered to take Australia’s score to 134/5 at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing 135, South Africa’s start was good as Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits started well, but Annabel Sutherland dismissed Tazmin Brits with a score of 15. Anneke Bosch came to the crease and built a partnership with the skipper, where the former was hitting boundaries often to transfer the pressure back to the Australian side, nothing was working against her, and the skipper contributed 42 runs in the chase before getting out. The winning runs came from Bosch as she hit the boundary to take her team past the target. South Africa won the match by 8 wickets.

“It’s going to be pretty hard to take. We just didn’t really show up tonight. You can’t afford to do that in tournaments like this. Full credit to South Africa. They outplayed us tonight. [on prep] Yeah, we’ve had this World Cup in our minds for a very long time now. We worked really hard over the off-season, fine-tuning some things. We really were prepped coming into here. Felt like we left no stone unturned. Just didn’t show up on the night. Lost toss, had to bat first on that pitch. We sort of jokingly said 160-170 [as target]. It wasn’t quite that kind of deck this evening. We found it quite tricky. South Africa bowled really well. They took the pace off nicely. Made it hard for us to take risks”

“It’s right up there. I think this is one of the best wins of my cricketing career for sure. A couple of other girls have said it as well. I think that was such an amazing chase. Bowlers are excellent. It’s been a good year for us. I think it’s been a real collective group effort. Obviously with them being the side that they are, I’m always wondering. You’re always looking at ways to sort of find a bit of a weakness. Maybe spend a bit more time analysing them than other teams. I’m glad some of the plans worked today. And I felt like our bowlers did excellently to restrict them. We didn’t have the best first two overs of the game. And then Taz and I just had a chat in the middle and said we have to get ahead of this very early. And then Anneke played her role perfectly”
