IND(W) vs SL(W): The Indian women defeated the Sri Lankan women by 82 runs.
India’s skipper won the toss and elected to bat first. Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana gave India the start it needed. Both batters had a partnership of 98 runs for the first wicket as Smriti Mandhana got out after scoring her fifty. Soon, Shafali Verma departed with a score of 43 as India lost 2 wickets for 98 runs. Jemimah Rodrigues batted for a while but got out after scoring 16 runs. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur ensured her team put a big total on the board and scored her fifty in just 27 balls. India put 172 runs on the board in 20 overs.
Chasing the target of 173 runs, Sri Lanka’s start was not good as Vishmi Gunaratne got dismissed in the first over as a great catch was taken by substitute Radha Yadav in the field. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu couldn’t do much for her team and got caught at slip during the second over of the match. After that, it was just one-way traffic as Indian bowlers didn’t let Sri Lanka’s batters score many runs and bowled them out on 90 in 19.5 overs, winning the match by 82 runs.

T20 Women’s World Cup 2024, Match 12th: IND(W) vs SL(W)| Captains’ Corner
We struggled even in the bowling. We dropped catches. We didn’t bowl in the right areas. Batters including me and Vishmi didn’t do a good job. We have to rethink what we have to do and bounce back. The first game is important in this tournament. It was low-scoring and as a batting unit, we had to chase [but we didn’t]. After that the dressing room was a little down. I try to lift them. [On takeaways] Happy with the bowling unit in the last two games. We have to improve our batting.”
Chamari Athapaththu(Sri Lanka Captain) said post-match
We just wanted to go with the momentum, Shafali and Smriti gave us a good start. Credit goes to them. They were there on the pitch, calculative, didn’t throw the wicket away. Jemi and I, we just wanted to score seven-eight runs an over. It was one of the days when I was in my zone, whenever ball was in my zone, I went hard. I was only thinking about positives. This wicket was not true to batting, you have to keep rotating the strike. Once ball is in your zone you can go for it. It’s not like you can keep swinging the bat. We were there and didn’t throw the wicket away. Really happy for the team.”
