Nat Sciver Brunt and Heather Knight during a match

SA(W) vs ENG(W): England won the 9th T20 World Cup 2024 match against South Africa by 7 wickets.

South Africa’s skipper, Laura Wolvaardt, won the toss and chose to bat first. The opening partnership of South Africa’s team was doing good as skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits were scoring runs in the powerplay, but in the sixth over, Tazmin Brits, while trying to go over the long-on fielder, got caught by Gibson as England got their first breakthrough. Anneke Bosch and Laura Wolvaardt had a decent and slow partnership for the second wicket. Bosch got out after scoring 18 runs. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt scored 42 runs for her team before getting out. Contributions from other batters helped South Africa put 124 runs on the board.

Chasing 125 runs, England’s start was cautious as openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt-Hodge took some time to read the pitch. South Africa’s bowlers weren’t letting England’s batters score runs frequently as in 4 overs England was on 16 runs and in the fifth Maia Bouchier got our after scoring 8 runs. Sloppy fielding and missed chances made England batters score extra runs. Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge partnered for the third wicket to take their team to a 7-wicket victory, finishing the match with 4 balls to spare.

Really pleased, that was a controlled win. The way we controlled the middle overs when they were batting…the pitch was a little better than the other day. We controlled the chase brilliantly, that partnership was outstanding to watch. They are the sort of games where you love captaining because you feel you can make a difference. Sophie was back to her best. She seemed to get a bit of bounce, somehow, which is strange on this wicket. Happy with our fielding as well, our energy and intent. (On Danni Wyatt-Hodge) You can see her getting frustrated, she is not used to scoring at that strike-rate (smiles).

Very disappointed. 10-20 more runs, could have been interesting. Did not take our chances in the field either. Bowlers bowled well but have to tighten in those two other areas. (On the pitch) Not as slow as the other games earlier. We were talking about the 140-mark. We lost our way a little, and maybe could have started (attacking) a little earlier. (On Kapp’s opening spell) Don’t think you can ask for much more with the new ball. We could have been a little bit better (controlling with spin). But against such batters, it is difficult to set fields.
