India defeated South Africa in a thrilling final to lift the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy.

India vs South Africa: In a thrilling final, India lifted the T20 World Cup title for the second time after defeating South Africa by 7 runs. This was India’s second T20 World Cup trophy in 17 years, and with that, Virat Kohli said goodbye to T20I cricket.

India’s skipper Rohit Sharma chose to bat first in the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 and got the start they needed as Virat Kohli hit three boundaries in the first over of the match. Then, Rohit Sharma deposited the first two balls of the next over to the boundary ropes. Indian batters were on fire, but while trying to seep the ball, Rohit Sharma got caught at square leg, and then, in the same over, Rishabh Pant attempted the same shot and caught by de Kock. India lost two quick wickets, and troubles were increased when Suryakumar Yadav caught at deep fine leg. India was three down, and that’s when Virat Kohli and Axar Patel started batting cautiously. The left-handed batter started taking on South African bowlers and scored 47 runs before getting dismissed. Virat Kohli partnered with Shivam Dube next; meanwhile, Dube hit some shots to contribute 27 crucial runs to the team’s total. India posted 176 runs on the board at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing 177 runs, South Africa’s start wasn’t great as they lost two wickets on the score of 13 in the first three overs. From there, Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs started hitting runs and decided to take on Indian spinners. Both batters were scoring runs as Indian spinners were looking clueless, but in the ninth over, Axar Patel made a comeback and picked up the wicket of Tristan Stubbs. That wicket brought Heinrich Klaasen to the crease, and the right-handed batter did his job by launching an attack on the bowlers. Meanwhile, in the 13th over, Quinton de Kock got out, but Klaasen kept going from one end and scored his fifty as South Africa was running towards the target. All hopes of winning for India were diminishing, and that’s when Hardik Pandya made a comeback by picking up the wicket of Klaasen in the 17th over and then two brilliant overs. In the last over, South Africa needed 16 runs to win; David Miller hit a great shot towards long-off where Suryakumar Yadav took an absolute blinder to change the course of the match, and Hardik Pandya held his nerve to take the win for India by 7 runs.

T20 World Cup 2024 Final: India vs South Africa| Captains’ Corner

Hard to sum up what we’ve been through in last three-four years. A lot behind the scenes, not what we did today, it’s what we did before. A lot of high-pressure games, and we’ve been on the wrong side of it. Guys understand when the pressure is on what needs to be done, today was perfect example, stuck together with backs to the wall. We wanted this really bad, a lot of mind needs to come together, very proud of the bunch of boys and the management, giving us the liberty to play and that trust. Starts from management, coach, captain, and the players.”

Rohit Sharma said post-match

Gutted for the time being, it’ll take some time to reflect on a really good campaign, hurts quite a bit but incredibly proud. We bowled well, not a lot to work with, it was a chaseable total, batted well, came down to the wire, gutted not to get over the line. It’s not over til the last ball is over, we never got comfortable, things happen quickly at the back end, but got into a great position to prove we were worthy finalists. South Africans are competitive, respectful and will go down with a fight. It’s still a proud moment for us.”
