Papua New Guinea vs New Zealand: New Zealand ended their T20 World Cup 2024 journey on a winning note by defeating Papua New Guinea by 7 wickets in their last league stage match.
New Zealand’s skipper chose to bowl first against PNG, and the Kiwi bowlers were off to a great start, picking the opener’s wickets inside the powerplay. New Zealand’s bowlers didn’t lose too many runs in the initial overs of the innings. Lockie Ferguson was the bowler who delivered an unimaginable spell of 4 overs in which he conceded no run and took 3 wickets, becoming the first bowler in the T20 World Cup history to do so. No batter in the PNG’s batting line-up scored more than 20 runs as PNG were bowled out for 78 runs in 20 overs.
Chasing a total of 79 runs, New Zealand lost their opener, Finn Allen, in the first over, and Racin Ravindra got dismissed cheaply. PNG was eyeing an upset, but Devon Conway and Kane Williamson didn’t let them do it and built a partnership to close the chase gap. Devon Conway scored 35 runs before getting dismissed, and New Zealand finished the chase in 12.2 overs to win the match by 7 wickets.

T20 World Cup 2024 Match 39: Papua New Guinea vs New Zealand| Captains’ Corner
“Turning up and trying to execute on this surface was about hitting an area, chasing was a bit of a grind but got across the line. At any tournament you want to start strong, adapting faster would have been important. A number of guys in our side will be around for a long time and they will be better for this experience, and these surfaces. I think after every tournament there’s a bit of reflection, this being Trent’s last ICC tournament, great servant of our game and the world game. Sad to see him go but that’s the nature of playing for a long time. As a guy, he’s got such a big appetite to keep getting better, trains hard, v fit, and v clear with how he wants to operate.
Kane Williamson(New Zealand Captain) said post-match
“A lot of learnings to take away from this tournament. Adapting quickly to the wickets, and the pace of the bowlers, we found challenging, we found a way, trying to give our best every time. We believed we could improve some areas, a bit in the wicket and they exploited it well. Some were rolling along the ground, we tried to adapt as best we could. With the World Cup, what we have done over the past month, a lot of people watching cricket back home. Not sure what’s next, the World Challenge League in Kenya will hopefully improve us in the future.”
