Namboori Thakur Tilak Varma was born on November 8, 2002, in Hyderabad, Telangana (formerly part of Andhra Pradesh), to Nagaraju Varma (his father) and Gayatri Devi (his mother). His father worked as an electrician, and his mother was a homemaker. When Tilak was 10, he started playing cricket and fell in love with it. Whenever he got free time, he played cricket, and in no time, his passion for the game started taking long strides and caught the eyes of a cricket coach, Salim Bayash, who spotted the talent in this young kid.

Tilak started training under him, and the coach-student duo developed a great bond. His coach not only helped him improve his game but also supported him whenever required. His coach rode him to the academy, which was 40 kilometers away from his home. Later, Tilak’s family moved near the academy, and he continued his training.

Domestic Cricket:

Tilak Varma started his domestic career playing for Hyderabad and made his debut for his state team in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy. In that Ranji season, he scored 215 runs in the seven matches he played, and next year, in 2019, he made his debut in List A cricket during the Vijay Hazare Trophy. In that tournament, he scored 180 runs in the five matches he played and also picked four wickets.

IPL Career:

The young left-handed batter was noticed by the Mumbai Indians selection committee, and they bought him during the IPL 2022 auction. Though his base price was Rs 20 lakh, they paid 1.7 crore to include him in their team, and he performed according to what was expected from him in the IPL 2022, as the left-handed batter scored a fifty in the second IPL match he played. He showed his mettle by scoring quick runs in the middle overs, due to which the Mumbai Indians retained him for the IPL 2023, and that season he was in sublime touch. In the first match of MI, he scored 84 off 46 balls, and in the semi-final match against Gujarat Titans, he scored 43 runs off just 14 balls. Though he couldn’t reach the final, he showed his caliber by changing gears whenever required.

International Career:

His IPL and domestic cricket performances caught the eyes of the selectors, and he was included in the squad for India’s West Indies tour. He was also part of the India T20I series against the West Indies, and in his fearless fashion, he opened his international run count with a six.
