With a surprising decision, Sri Lanka’s spin sensation Wanindu Hasaranga, at 26, announced his retirement from International Test cricket. Hasaranga was a regular appearance in the limited overs formats for Sri Lanka, and so far his stats in international cricket are magnificent, but his performance in the oldest format of cricket was not as good as his limited overs one, as the spinner only managed to take four wickets in the four test matches he played for the team and hasn’t played any test since 2021, his last test was against Bangladesh. The spinner has so far scalped 158 wickets in total in the limited-overs format (both ODI and T20I).
Wanindu Hasaranga decided to leave Test cricket to focus on white ball cricket as his limited overs game is far superior to his Test game. In fact, in the qualifiers match, he performed really well to ensure his team qualified for the ICC Cricket World Cup team’s list. He ended the qualifiers as the highest wicket taker; he picked 22 wickets in the qualifiers. Apart from that, he plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the cash-rich league (IPL) and in various T20 cricket leagues around the world, which earns him a lot of money and that is also one of the reasons for leaving the test cricket as white ball leagues are lucrative compared to red-ball one.
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board confirmed that the decision taken by Wanindu Hasaranga is his own, and SLC won’t interfere in that. They are also optimistic that the spinner will make a regular appearance in the white ball format, where he is performing really well.
We will accept his decision and are confident that Hasaranga will be a vital part of our white-ball program going forward,
Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket.
