Was Akash Deep’s Delivery To Joe Root A Back-Foot No-Ball? MCC Clarifies The Rule To Doubters

Akashdeep during a test match

India’s bowler Akash Deep‘s extraordinary performance in the 2nd test match against England at Edgbaston not only helped team India secure the win but also level the 5-match series at 1-1. India’s pacer Akashdeep scalped 10 wickets in the second test, picking up 4 wickets in the 1st innings and then 6 wickets in the 2nd innings to become 2nd Indian bowler after Chetan Sharma to pick a 10-wicket Haul on an English pitch. The praises were also surrounded by a controversy, which started when Akash Deep dismissed Joe Root on the 4th day of the test match. In the footage, the bowler’s back-foot while delivering the ball looked like landing wide near the return crease, which should be called a no-ball, but the third umpire remained silent on that.

Now, after much debate, the Marylebone Cricket Club, the custodian of cricket laws, issued a statement claiming that the delivery was within the rules and a legitimate one.

On Day four of India’s Test against England last week, there were questions raised about the delivery from Akash Deep which bowled Joe Root, with some fans and commentators believing it to be a no ball. While Deep landed unusually wide on the crease, and some of his back foot appeared to touch the ground outside the return crease, the third umpire did not call a no ball. MCC is happy to clarify that this was a correct decision in Law.”

MCC spokesperson said

Mentioning Law 21.5.1, MCC said that the legality of a delivery is calculated based on the initial point of contact of the back foot.

Clearly, at the point Deep’s foot first touched the ground, the back foot was within and not touching the return crease. Some of his foot may have touched the ground outside the crease subsequently, that is not relevant to this Law,”

MCC stated

India went on to register their first test victory at Edgbaston against England and leveled the series 1-1. The 3rd test match will start from 10th July 2025 at Lord’s.
