In the game of cricket, spectacular fielding efforts not only saved crucial runs during the game but also led to getting wickets. As per an age-old cricket quote that says, “Catches win matches,” which is true; a player close to the boundary line always tries to save as many runs as possible. If the ball comes towards them airborne, then there are chances that a wicket will fall, and players try their best to get it done. While trying, that audience sees some great tactics used by the player, but a new rule by the ICC has slightly changed the fielding rules near the boundary line, and catches taken in the way not mentioned in the new rule will be deemed illegal.

The custodians of the laws of the game, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has amended Law 19.5.2 to limit the number of touches to the airborne catches.

The earlier version of the Law 19.5.2 stated

“A fielder who is not in contact with the ground is considered to be grounded beyond the boundary if his/her final contact with the ground, before his/her first contact with the ball, was not entirely within the boundary.”

What will change After The New Law?

According to the new rule, a jump from outside the boundary is still allowed and allows the player to touch the ball, but after the first touch, every time the player contacts the ground, it must be inside the field. In relay catches, if a fielder outside the boundary throws a ball inside to another fielder, then both of them must land inside the field until the completion, and if they don’t, a boundary will be given.

The “Bunny Hop” Catch Which will be called Illegal after the implementation of new rule.
