GG vs RCB: Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Gujarat Giants in the first match of the Women’s Premier League 2025.
RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana, after winning the toss, decided to bowl first. Laura Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney started the innings for GG. Renuka Singh didn’t take much time to get her first breakthrough as she bowled Laura Wolvaardt on a score of 6. Soon, Dayalan Hemalatha got out as Gujarat lost 2 quick wickets. Skipper Ashleigh Gardner took the responsibility and started building a partnership with Beth Mooney as both took the score to 85. unfortunately, Beth Mooney got caught after scoring 56 runs from there; the skipper showed her skills and started hitting bowlers all over the park and remained not out on 79 runs to take her team to a total of 201 runs at the end of 20 overs.
Chasing the target of 202 runs, RCB’s start wasn’t good as both Smriti Mandhana and Danni Wyatt-Hodge got out early in the powerplay, and both were sent back to the dugout by skipper Ashleigh Gardner. Though Ellyse Perry and Raghvi Bist stabilized the innings and took the score to 100+ runs, the former scored her fifty, but Dottin dismissed the latter on 25 runs to give another blow to the RCB. Soon, Ellyse Perry got out after scoring 57 runs, and the match started slipping away from RCB’s grip, but a dropped catch of Richa Ghosh changed the course as the batter hit a blistering knock of 64 runs off 27 balls, and Kanika Ahuja supported her to take their team to 6 wickets victory.

I am really happy that we were on the winning side. The way Richa and Pez (Perry) batted, it was amazing to watch. (On the middle order firing) Brilliant to watch, they have been doing that in the nets. Really happy that things clicked. After the first innings, we knew it would be tough to bowl, so always thought we were in the game. We lost the top three wicket-takers of last year, but luckily we had good options (coming in).

Pretty flattening to be honest. 200 was probably only a par score and we needed to bowl really well. It was not to be unfortunately. We dropped some chances, which hurt us in the end. There are always going to be positives in every game, unfortunately not able to come away with a win. Plenty of performances – Mooney at the top setting the tone and Deandra doing what she does best – there were glimpses with the bat but if you miss those chances, that can hurt you. She (Ghosh) batted really well and took her side to a win.
