The US-based Haas team has made an early move for the 2025 Formula 1 season, securing the services of one-time race winner Esteban Ocon. The French driver will partner with rookie Oliver Bearman in an all-new driver lineup.
Why Ocon Chose Haas
- Familiarity and Trust: Ocon’s relationship with Ayao Komatsu, Haas’ Team Principal, played a crucial role. Komatsu engineered Ocon during his first F1 test with Lotus in 2014. The trust between them made Ocon feel wanted at Haas.
- Different Environment: Haas offers a different environment than a working manufacturer. It’s a more minor, independent team with a family feel and less politics. Kevin Magnussen thrived in this atmosphere after challenging stints at McLaren and Renault.
- Team Leader Role: Ocon will be the de facto team leader at Haas. This responsibility could fuel his desire to prove himself further in Formula 1.
Why Haas Wanted Ocon
- Komatsu’s Choice: Ayao Komatsu was clear several months ago that Ocon was the driver he wanted alongside Bearman. Komatsu knows Ocon well and believes in his potential within the right environment.
- Experience Needed: With rookie Bearman in one seat, Haas needed experience in the other. Ocon’s credentials make him an upgrade over Nico Hulkenberg, who is bound for Sauber/Audi.
- Project Confidence: Ocon’s multi-year commitment to Haas boosts the team’s confidence in their project. It also enhances their appeal to commercial partners.
- Quick Adaptation: Ocon has consistently hit the ground running when starting new projects. This adaptability will be crucial in the tight midfield battle next year.
Esteban Ocon was excited about joining Haas for the 2025 Formula 1 season. He stated, “I am thrilled to embark on this new chapter in my Formula 1 career and join Haas from the start of the 2025 season. I’ll join a very ambitious racing team whose spirit, work ethic, and undeniable upward trajectory have impressed me.” Ocon’s move to Haas reflects the team’s commitment to their project and desire to build a competitive lineup.
