Atletico Madrid delivered a stunning performance on Monday as they crushed Rayo Vallecano 7-0 in their own backyard. It was the biggest away win in La Liga history for the reigning champions, who showed no mercy to their city rivals.
The visitors took control of the game from the outset, with Antoine Griezmann opening the scoring in the 2nd minute with a clinical finish. Memphis Depay doubled the lead in the 16th minute with a powerful shot from outside the box, but he had to be substituted shortly after due to a muscle problem. Nahuel Molina made it 3-0 before the break with a header from a corner.
The second half was even more one-sided, as Atletico ran riot with four goals in quick succession. Alvaro Morata scored twice in the 73rd and 84th minutes, both from close range. Angel Correa added a 5th goal in the 79th minute with a curling shot from the edge of the area. Marcos Llorente completed the scoring in the 86th minute with a low drive that beat the keeper to add 7th goal in the goal feast game from the Madrid side.
Atletico were unstoppable, displaying their quality, intensity, and ruthlessness in front of goal. They moved up to second place in the table, two points behind leaders Real Madrid, who have played same number of matches but won all three matches. Rayo Vallecano, on the other hand, remained in the middle of the table after winning two first matches and losing the 3rd one.
It was a memorable night for Atletico Madrid and their fans, who enjoyed a historic victory over their neighbors. Diego Simone’s men proved once again why they are the defending champions and one of the favorites to win the title this season.
