F.C. Barcelona has posted a statement on their websites about Ilkay Gundogan joining their club after agreeing on the terms and conditions of his contract.
Gundogan signed a two-year contract on June 30th, 2025, with the option to extend the contract for one more year. Barcelona doesn’t want to lose Gundogan, so their buyout clause is 400 million euros, which is an impossible deal for anyone to give to any team.
Gundogan is 32 years old and does not have really long career now, but he has been Pep Gurdiola best signing because he scored so many title-decider goals, not just match decider. In the 2021/2022 season, he scored two late goals for Manchester City to lift the Premier League trophy, and in the FA Cup final in 2023, he scored two goals to clinch the title for Man City.
Gundogan won a Treble just now after winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League titles. He won it all in the club after staying in for 7 years Manchester City, scoring 60 goals which made him only the third midfield player to score around 60 goals.
He was a bit emotional about leaving the club after being here for 7 years, which he said in the statement.
“When I first arrived here, I was a young man with no kids and a lot of dreams. It’s hard for me to even believe, but I am leaving seven years later as a father who has fulfilled every single dream that he ever had.
“Today is bittersweet. Goodbyes are never easy, but it’s even harder with this team.
“When I had to break the news to the boys that I was leaving in our group chat, I was very emotional. I will miss all of them, honestly.
“But I am happy to say that I’m leaving here as a champion, and I have nothing but love for the club in my heart.
“How many footballers can say goodbye as the captain of a Treble team?”
Ilkay Gundogan said in the players Tribune website
Barcelona coach Xavi took his team to the La Liga title in the 2022/2023 season and talked to Gundogan thrice to convince him to be in his team because the midfield area of Barcelona is getting quite old as Sergio Busquets is already out of the club and he wanted to replace with someone senior who knows how to run the midfield as he will have the support of two prodigy midfielders Gavi and Pedri.
Pep Guardiola found it really hard to let go of Gundogan because he was the engine in the Manchester City team, but for Gundogan it was harder to tell Pep about his exit because Pep was hoping him to extend one more year contract to stay in the Premier League but Gundogan wants to face a new challenge in the new league. Gundogan won 12 titles in his 304 appearances for the club, scoring 60 goals, and in the last 2 seasons, he has been one of the top scorers for Manchester City.
