Indian Men’s Football Team Eliminated from Asian Games 2023 After 2-0 Loss to Saudi Arabia

India's men's football team exits Asian Games 2023 after a 2-0 loss to Saudi Arabia.

The Indian men’s football team faced a disappointing exit from the Asian Games 2023 after succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against Saudi Arabia in their round of 16 match at the Huanglong Sports Center Stadium in Hangzhou, China.

Mohammed Khalil Marran emerged as the hero for Saudi Arabia, netting both goals for his team in the 51st and 57th minutes, respectively. The Indian side, currently ranked 102nd in the senior men’s FIFA rankings, was up against the 57th-ranked Saudi Arabia. However, Asian Games men’s football tournaments are designed for players under 23, with each squad allowed a maximum of three overage players.

In their journey to the knockout stage, the Indian team, led by Sunil Chhetri, had a mixed bag of results. They started with a 5-1 loss to China in their opening game but bounced back with a 1-0 win against Bangladesh and a 1-1 draw with Myanmar. This performance secured their place in the pre-quarterfinals, finishing second in Pool A behind China.

The match saw India employing a 4-4-2 formation and opting for a deep defensive approach, while Saudi Arabia used long balls to pressure the Indian defense. The Indian backline, led by the experienced Sandesh Jhingan, held firm against the Saudi offensive attempts.

Despite Saudi Arabia enjoying more possession, India had their moments. Sunil Chhetri had a chance with a shot that was saved by the Saudi goalkeeper, and Sandesh Jhingan’s header from a free-kick was cleared off the goal line.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, had their share of close calls, with a shot by Musab Al-Juwayr hitting the woodwork. They continued to press the Indian defense, but some determined defending kept the score level at halftime.

In the second half, Saudi Arabia stepped up their game, and India struggled to keep up. After sustained pressure, Mohammed Khalil Marran broke the deadlock with a headed goal, putting Saudi Arabia ahead.

Despite their best efforts, the Indian team couldn’t muster a comeback, and Saudi Arabia held on to secure a 2-0 victory, ending India’s journey in the Asian Games 2023.
