Harry Kane’s Bundesliga debut for Bayern Munich was a resounding success, as the England captain scored and assisted in a 4-0 win over Werder Bremen on Friday. Kane, who joined Bayern from Tottenham for a record-breaking 100 million euros, showed his class and quality in his first league appearance for the German champions.
Kane gave an assist for the opening goal for Leroy Sane in the fourth minute with a clever chip over Bremen’s defense that Sane ran onto and finished calmly. Kane then had several chances to score himself but was denied by Bremen goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka and the woodwork.
He finally got his debut goal in the 75th minute when he swept in a low shot from 15 yards after a neat exchange with Sane. Kane then made way for Mathys Tel, who scored Bayern’s fourth goal in injury time. Sane had earlier scored his second of the night in the 82nd minute after a solo run and a powerful strike.
Kane admitted he was “nervous” before his debut but said he was happy with his performance and the result. He also praised his new teammates and coach Thomas Tuchel for helping him settle in quickly.
“It was a good night. We started well with a goal in the first few minutes. I was a little bit nervous (and) excited to play the game, of course. For sure, there were a few butterflies, but as always, when I get on the pitch, instinct takes over.”
Kane said to the Dazn Media
Bayern’s dominant display sent a strong message to their rivals as they aim to win their 12th consecutive Bundesliga title. They also bounced back from their 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup last week, which had raised some doubts about their form and cohesion.
Bremen, on the other hand, had a night to forget, as they were outclassed and outplayed by Bayern. They offered little resistance in defense and little threat in attack, as they failed to register a single shot on target. Their manager Ole Werner said they were too passive and too deep in the first half, which allowed Bayern to take control of the game.
It was a solid start for the Bundesliga champions, and now they will look to keep the same intensity in the upcoming matches, as last season was not quite amazing for them.
