Former Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal has made a shocking claim that Argentina rigged the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar to help Lionel Messi win his first major trophy with his national team. Van Gaal, who also managed Manchester United in the past, said that he saw evidence of foul play and bias in Argentina’s matches, especially in their quarter-final win over his Dutch side.
Van Gaal told NOS, a Dutch media outlet, that he was suspicious of how Argentina scored their goals and how some of their players escaped punishment for their actions on the field. He said that it was all part of a plan to make Messi the world champion, something that he deserved but not in this way.
“I don’t want to talk too much about it. But when you see how Argentina gets the goals and how we get the goals and how some Argentina players overstepped the mark and were not punished, then I think it was all a premeditated game,”
“I mean everything I say. That Messi should become the world champion? I think so, yes. But not like this.”
van Gaal said in a interview
Argentina and Netherlands met in the quarter-final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where the game ended 2-2 after extra time. The Netherlands had to play with ten men for the last few minutes after Denzel Dumfries was shown a red card by the referee. In the penalty shootout, Argentina prevailed 4-3 over van Gaal’s team.
Van Gaal’s allegations have caused a stir in the football world, as many fans and experts have dismissed them as sour grapes and conspiracy theories. Argentina went on to win the World Cup by beating France in penalties, with Messi scoring the only goal of the match. Messi was also awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament.
