In a stunning display of dominance, Manchester City took a commanding lead in the Premier League title race by defeating leaders Arsenal 4-1. Kevin De Bruyne’s two goals were instrumental in closing the gap to just two points, with two games in hand, leaving City in an enviable position to retain their crown as English champions. Although Arsenal has held on to the top spot for some time now, their bid for a first league title in almost two decades may have reached a dead end, as the team has failed to win in their last four games. With just seven matches remaining in the season, the race for the title is still on, but it’s clear that Manchester City is in a prime position to clinch their fifth title in six seasons under Pep Guardiola’s guidance.

Manchester City showed their dominance in their match against Arsenal, with the arrival of Erling Haaland adding a new dimension to the already powerful team. Haaland’s 33 Premier League goals in a 38-game season set a record, and his total for the season in all competitions reached an impressive 49. However, he also showcased his ability to create opportunities for his team, as shown by his sublime pass to set up De Bruyne for the opening goal just seven minutes into the game. Arsenal struggled to recover from the early setback and were lucky to avoid being blown away before halftime. For the first time this season, Arsenal was outclassed by City, who flexed their muscles and demonstrated their superiority in the English game.

It was a heart-stopping moment when Ben White made a last-ditch block, denying De Bruyne an almost identical opportunity to his first goal. With Haaland setting him free, it seemed inevitable that De Bruyne would score, but White had other plans. Despite Ramsdale’s efforts to keep Arsenal in the game with an impressive hat-trick of saves, it was ultimately John Stones who found the back of the net with De Bruyne’s free-kick in first-half stoppage time. VAR confirmed that Stones was onside, leaving Arsenal with no reprieve. In the second half, Ramsdale continued his battle with Haaland and managed to prevent City’s striker from galloping clean through from Ederson’s long ball.

Arsenal’s already shaky defence suffered yet another blow as they lost to Haaland’s clever set up for De Bruyne to find the bottom corner with a nutmeg on Rob Holding. Holding, who has been blamed for Arsenal’s recent defensive issues, has been struggling to replace William Saliba, who is currently injured. With 10 goals conceded in their last four games, Arteta’s men have a huge challenge ahead of themselves in the final weeks of the campaign, if they hope to keep any sort of pressure on City. Although it was a small consolation, Arsenal managed to score a goal four minutes before the end of the match thanks to the unlikely figure of Holding making a smashing goal.

Manchester City are quickly closing in on a historic treble, with their sights set on a third consecutive Premier League title. While an Arsenal response may be possible, City’s dominance on the pitch has been anything but imperious. Even Real Madrid may struggle to stop them in the Champions League semifinals, which will be followed by a hotly anticipated FA Cup final against Manchester United. To cap off their success, young star Erling Haaland indeed set a new record with his 33rd Premier League goal this season as he helped City secure yet another victory. It’s clear that this team is firing on all cylinders and on track to make history.
