Man United’s Mason Mount Faces Stiff Competition for England Squad Return

Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor believes Mason Mount faces tough competition to rejoin the England squad, naming other midfielders ahead of him.

Mason Mount, the summer signing for Manchester United, is encountering a challenging path to regain his spot in the England national team, according to former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor.

Mount, 24, secured a high-profile transfer to Manchester United with a reported £55 million deal during the summer. However, injuries have restricted his playing time, limiting him to just seven appearances totaling 425 minutes for his new club. In Manchester United’s recent Champions League fixture against FC Copenhagen, Mount was an unused substitute.

Despite previously being a regular presence in the England squad with 36 caps to his name, Mount has been excluded from the last three international squads announced by manager Gareth Southgate.

Agbonlahor believes that Mount is currently behind other midfield contenders in the race for an England call-up. Players like Conor Gallagher, James Ward-Prowse, and James Maddison are ahead of him, according to the former striker.

Mount plays in a highly competitive position, and even Ward-Prowse, who has been in remarkable form, has struggled to secure a spot in the England squad. Agbonlahor points out that Mount is up against formidable talents like Gallagher, Maddison, Bellingham, and Foden, making it challenging for him to make a comeback.

To regain his place in the England squad, Agbonlahor suggests that Mount must start performing consistently for Manchester United. As of now, it appears to be a daunting task, given his limited playing time since joining the club.

England’s next opponents are Malta on November 17 and North Macedonia on November 20, and Mount will have to put in exceptional performances at the club level to catch Southgate’s attention and secure his return to the national team.
