If you were expecting to hear Jose Mourinho’s thoughts on AS Roma’s 2-1 defeat to Milan, you were out of luck. The Roma coach decided to snub the media after his team lost to a 10-man Milan side, who scored two goals in the first half and defended well in the second. The only thing Mourinho did after the game was to clap sarcastically at the referee, who had given a penalty to Milan in the 13th minute.
This was not the start that Mourinho had hoped for when he took over Roma in the summer. The Giallorossi have only one point from their first three games and are already eight points behind the leaders. They also have a long list of injuries, missing some of their best players like Paulo Dybala, Sardar Azmoun, Renato Sanches, Tammy Abraham, and Marash Kumbulla.
Mourinho had tried to boost his team’s morale before the game, saying that they were ready to face Milan and that he was confident in his players. He had also spoken to DAZN before the kick-off but apparently had nothing to say after the final whistle.
Milan, on the other hand, showed why they are one of the favorites for the title this season. They took the lead through Olivier Giroud, who converted a spot-kick after Rui Patricio fouled Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the box. They doubled their advantage through Rafael Leao, who scored a spectacular overhead kick from a cross by Theo Hernandez.
Roma got a lifeline when Fikayo Tomori was sent off for two yellow cards on Andrea Belotti, both for pulling his shirt. Mourinho brought on Romelu Lukaku, who made his Roma debut after joining from Inter Milan but could not make an impact. Leonardo Spinazzola scored a late goal for Roma with a deflected shot from outside the box, but it was too little, too late.
Mourinho will have to find a way to turn things around quickly, or he might face more pressure and criticism from the fans and the media. He is known for his mind games and his outspokenness, but this time, he chose to remain silent. Maybe he was too angry, too disappointed, or too embarrassed. Or maybe he just had nothing to say.
