It was a dream come true for Newcastle United fans when they saw their team secure a fourth-place finish in the Premier League with 71 points, just four points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool. The Magpies had not played in the Champions League since the 2002/03 season when they reached the second group stage under Sir Bobby Robson.
The 2022/23 season was a remarkable turnaround for Newcastle, who had been struggling in the bottom half of the table before the Saudi-backed takeover in October 2021. Eddie Howe, who replaced Steve Bruce as manager, brought in some quality signings such as Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman, Loris Karius, and Matt Targett, and also improved the performances of existing players like Callum Wilson, Bruno Guimaraes, and Fabian Schar.
Newcastle started the season with a 3-0 win over newly-promoted Nottingham Forest at St. James’ Park and never looked back. They recorded some memorable victories over Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea and also reached the final of the EFL Cup, where they lost to Manchester United by a 2-0 scoreline. Their top scorer was Wilson, who netted 18 goals in the league, followed by Miguel Almiron with 11.
The defensive work was the key for them as they conceded the lowest number of goals in the last season alongside Manchester City 33 and they scored 68 goals which are quite ok for a team, but now, in the new season, they will look to fight for the title even if it is the outside chance for them, but they have the capabilities to win it as they showed last season.
Newcastle United also have a good amount of money through which they brought some good players like Sandro Tonali from AC Milan recently for about €64.00m, Harvey Barnes for about €44.00m from Leicester City, Yankuba Minteh from Odense BK for about €8.00m and their latest signing from Southampton Tino Livramento for about €37.20m.
Newcastle’s defense and midfield look solid, but they still need one proper striker who can give them a lot of goals for the new season if they want to stand a chance to fight for the UEFA Champions League next season or for the League Title. They tried to sign Victor Osimhen, but it is said that the player is not interested in being part of the Newcastle team. They are also looking for another rising star and partner of Osimhen Kvaratskhlia, who is not dead, as the Napoli club is not looking to sell his rising player yet.
Newcastle fans are now eagerly awaiting the Champions League group stage draw, hoping to see their team face some of the best clubs in Europe. They are also optimistic about their chances of challenging for silverware next season, as Howe has already expressed his desire to strengthen his squad further. Newcastle United are back in business and ready to take on the world.
