Newcastle United Seals UEFA Champions League Spot Despite 0-0 Draw with Bournemouth.

After a hard-fought match, Newcastle United ensured their place in the UEFA Champions League next season by securing a 0-0 draw against Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth side. Despite dominating the game for large parts of the match, Newcastle were unable to break the deadlock and settle on a single point as sufficient for them to take that fourth and final spot in the Champions League. 

The match saw Newcastle enjoy 78% of possession, but it was Bournemouth who had the first chance of the match when Callum Wilson struck an effort against the post in the 24th minute. However, despite this opportunity, neither side were able to create any chances of note during a largely even contest. 

As the match progressed, Newcastle began to find more joy in attack and almost broke the deadlock when Allan Saint-Maximin hit the post, yet despite this further chance they were unable to make their dominance count.

In spite of the result, it was a day to remember for the Magpies, as they celebrated their return to Europe’s elite competition for the first time since 2006-07. The result also means that Newcastle are now four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool and seemingly assured of a top-four finish ahead of Sunday’s final day of action. 

For Bournemouth, meanwhile, the draw leaves them two points adrift of safety and still in the relegation zone, as they face a fight to remain in the Premier League. 

The result was one that both Newcastle and Bournemouth will take positives from, with the former assured of Champions League football and the latter having just another game to battle for their top flight survival.
