Former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has weighed in on Lewis Gordon’s performance as a makeshift striker for Newcastle United. Despite the 22-year-old’s commendable adaptation to the role, McAvennie revealed a preference for Gordon’s typical position on the left wing.
Gordon has been thrust into the center-forward position due to injuries to key players like Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak, with their return dates slated for May and late February respectively. While Gordon showcased his versatility by leading the line in Newcastle’s recent 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest and converting a penalty, McAvennie noted that he is yet to score from open play in that role this season.
Although acknowledging Gordon’s potential for growth in the striker position, McAvennie expressed eagerness to see him return to his natural position on the left wing. He believes that Gordon’s time as a striker will enhance his overall understanding of the game, but ultimately, his strengths lie in running at defenders rather than leading the line.
McAvennie’s observations highlight Gordon’s adaptability and willingness to contribute to the team’s cause despite playing out of position. However, he emphasized that Gordon appears more comfortable when operating in wide areas, where he can utilize his pace and dribbling ability to greater effect.
While Gordon’s stint as a striker may prove beneficial for his development, McAvennie suggested that it is unlikely to become his permanent role, given his apparent discomfort in leading the line. Nevertheless, he commended Gordon for his efforts in filling the void left by injured strikers and acknowledged the challenges faced by Newcastle manager Eddie Howe in fielding a makeshift frontline.
In other news, sources indicate that Newcastle United and Aston Villa are leading the race to secure the signature of an Arsenal star, signaling the club’s ambition in the transfer market amidst ongoing injury concerns.
