Chelsea has been on a spending spree since Todd Boehly’s ownership group took over the club last year, splashing out over £900m on new players. But Pep Guardiola has insisted that Manchester City are not in the same league regarding transfer spending and that they only pay a fair price for their targets or rely on their academy.
Guardiola said that he would face a lot of criticism if he spent as much as Chelsea did in the last two transfer windows and that he was unaware of having a lot of money to buy players.
Pep Guardiola gave a bold statement about Chelsea’s Spending in the Transfer market as he said he wanted to play fair. It is going to raise a few eyebrows.
“I couldn’t sit here if we spent what Chelsea spent in the last two transfer windows – you would kill me,” Guardiola said. “You will kill me, that is for sure. We’d be under scrutiny like you couldn’t imagine. “When people say just Manchester City and Pep Guardiola buy players, I didn’t know I had a lot of money in my pocket to buy all my players. “We have to see what happens in the market and if we can do it and pay what we believe is fair. “We wanted (Harry) Maguire and didn’t buy him because we didn’t want to pay, we wanted (Marc) Cucurella and didn’t pay, we wanted Alexis Sanchez and didn’t pay.
Guardiola also said that he was not trying to attack Chelsea but that he felt there was a double standard when it came to judging City’s spending. “I’m not criticizing Chelsea, they do what they want, and they are doing very well,” he said. “But I’m just saying that we are not in the same situation as them.”
Guardiola also admitted that City may have to look at the transfer market after Kevin De Bruyne suffered a serious knee injury that could keep him out for several months. The Belgian playmaker was one of City’s best players last season, scoring 13 goals and providing 20 assists in all competitions.
“He’s a very important player for us. He’s irreplaceable,” Guardiola said. “We will miss him a lot, but we have to find solutions. We have other players who can play in his position, but maybe we will have to look at the market and see if we can bring someone in.”
Chelsea finished 12 last season, which was their worst-ever finish in the premier league for the last 3 decades after spending over 850+ million euros on players, which is a record by any club but still failed to even be in the top ten teams in the premier league. Four managers managed Chelsea Football Club last season, another record by them as it never happened that 4 managers managed a single team in the same season. They recently signed Moises Caicedo for record-breaking 115 million euros and Lavia for about 58 million euros which is crazy, but it’s not ended there as they are ready to make one or two more signings.
