Rangers Eye Thierry Small to Bolster Squad for Title Defence

Rangers have registered their interest in signing Southampton's left-back Thierry Small as they look to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season

Rangers have shown interest in signing Southampton’s young left-back, Thierry Small, according to Football Insider sources. The 18-year-old is one of the most highly rated players coming through at St Marys Stadium and Rangers are hoping to bring Small to Glasgow this summer.

The Scottish club has contacted Southampton about the teenager, and has asked the Premier League side to keep them informed about any developments concerning Small over the coming months.

Small is highly rated at Southampton, having made his first-team debut in December 2019 and playing regularly for their Under-23s. He impressed with his performances for the Under-23s last season, even keeping fellow youth prodigy Kyle Walker-Peters out of the side.

The left-back is strong defensively, but can also get forward well and has an eye for a pass. His attributes would be perfect for Rangers’ expansive style of play under Steven Gerrard.

Rangers are also looking to make other additions this summer, with defender Leon Balogun already signed up and winger Florian Kamberi joining on loan from Hibernian. Gerrard has made it clear that he is looking to strengthen his squad ahead of their title defence next season, and Small could be a key part of that plan.

The addition of Small would not only bolster Rangers’ defensive options, but would also add to their already impressive array of talent. In addition to his defensive capabilities, Small is a player with bags of potential and could develop into one of the best left-backs in Scotland over time.

Rangers’ pursuit of Thierry Small may be an indication that Steven Gerrard is looking to strengthen his squad for what looks to be a tricky title defence next season. With experience at the highest level, Small could prove to be an astute signing and help Gerrard’s side stay ahead of their rivals.
