Suspected terrorist attack near Brussels stadium leads to match abandonment and two fatalities.

In a shocking turn of events, a suspected terrorist attack near King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels has led to the abandonment of the Euro 2024 qualifier match between Belgium and Sweden. Two Swedish individuals were tragically shot dead, wearing Sweden football shirts, prompting a manhunt for the assailant.

The incident occurred near Boulevard d’Ypres, just three miles from the stadium, where fans were eagerly awaiting the match. Chilling videos circulating on social media depict a gunman pursuing a person into a building, followed by gunshots. The assailant, described as wearing a fluorescent orange jacket, reportedly fled the scene.

Belgium’s Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo, extended his condolences to the Swedish Prime Minister, expressing solidarity in the fight against terrorism. Meanwhile, Mayor of Brussels Philippe Close confirmed the mobilization of law enforcement to secure the city.

As a result of the security situation and players’ concerns, the match was abandoned at half-time. Players refused to return to the pitch for the second half, and a public announcement in the stadium explained their decision. UEFA, in consultation with the teams and local authorities, made the difficult choice to abandon the match.

The national crisis center in Belgium subsequently elevated the terrorist alert to the highest level in Brussels and the second-highest across the country. All attendees at the stadium were advised not to leave due to security reasons.

This horrifying incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in combating such acts. The tragedy has left both football fans and the global community in shock and mourning for the victims of this suspected terrorist attack.
