Thibaut Courtois’s injury gave headache Real Madrid a before the season started

Thibaut Courtois in action

Thibaut Courtois, the star goalkeeper of Real Madrid, has suffered a serious injury that could sideline him for most of the season. He has torn his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee during a training session and will need surgery to repair it. This is a huge blow for Real Madrid, who are about to start their La Liga campaign with an away game against Athletic Club on August 13.

Courtois has been one of the best goalkeepers in the world for the past few years, winning two La Liga titles, one Champions League trophy, and the Yashin Trophy award for the best goalkeeper in 2022. He has made 230 appearances for Real Madrid since joining them from Chelsea in 2018. He is also the first-choice keeper for Belgium, who are among the favorites to win the World Cup next year. He conceded 219 goals and kept 91 clean sheets.

With Courtois out of action, Real Madrid have a big problem to solve in the goalkeeping department. Their only other option is Andriy Lunin, a young Ukrainian keeper who has not impressed much in his limited opportunities. Real Madrid are reportedly looking for a replacement for Courtois in the transfer market and have contacted former Manchester United keeper David De Gea, who is a free agent after leaving Old Trafford this summer. They are also interested in Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga and Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou, among others.

However, finding a suitable and available goalkeeper at this stage of the transfer window is difficult, and Real Madrid may have to settle for Lunin as their starter for the foreseeable future. This could affect their chances of competing for domestic and European honors this season as they face tough rivals like Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain. Real Madrid fans will hope that Courtois can recover and return to his best form as soon as possible.
