This triumphant result not only marked their dominance but also positioned them at the pinnacle of the Elite Pool in the Women’s Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier, held in Salalah, Oman.
The clash between India and Thailand was highly anticipated, considering both teams entered the match unbeaten in the Elite Pool. However, it was India’s superior goal-scoring record that granted them the pole position on the points table ahead of this crucial showdown.
Right from the onset, India displayed their intent to dominate the proceedings. They wasted no time in breaching Thailand’s defense and found the back of the net twice within the opening minute of the match. Thailand’s captain, Piresram Anongnat, managed to pull one back for her team by converting a challenging goal in the 3rd minute.
The first half was an intense battle, culminating in a 3-3 scoreline after Aunjai Natthakarn’s twin strikes in the closing moments of the half. Natthakarn emerged as the standout goal-scorer among the Elite Pool teams, amassing six goals in three matches.
As the second half commenced, India continued to press forward, creating multiple scoring opportunities. Although they struggled to capitalize on these chances, they managed to break Thailand’s defense once again in the 19th minute, with Suwapat Konthong putting Thailand in the lead for the first time in the match.
However, India’s determination remained unwavering. In the final 10 minutes of the game, they showcased their mettle by scoring twice, sealing their final league match of the Women’s Asian Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifier with a thrilling 5-4 victory. Remarkably, India emerged as the sole unbeaten team in the Elite Pool Group, underscoring their exceptional performance throughout the tournament.
