Michael Chandler will face former UFC lightweight champ Charles Oliveira in the co-main event of the UFC 309. Chandler has been inactive for more than 2 years now, and such a long wait to fight in the Octagon was the McGregor fight, which he was chasing just to end up fighting a rematch against Charles Oliveira. Michael Chandler was earlier scheduled to clash with Conor McGregor at UFC 303, but the Irish MMA star pull-out made UFC change its plans and book a rematch, and the “Iron” who is known for his ruthless striking and get-go approach from the bell of the first round is looking for a calculative approach this time.
You know we’ll see [if I’ll start fast against Oliveira], you never really know, that’s the beautiful thing about this sport, you never really know. Nobody will ever know until that cage door closes right?… [That being said] I’m still going to be vintage Michael Chandler. Still going to be the most exciting guy at Madison Square Garden, still going to steal the show, still going to keep people on the edge of their seats, but it’s going to be in a very interesting fashion.”
Chandler said during interview
The “Iron” vs “Do Bronx” rematch is undoubtedly an exciting match-up; fans also want to see whether the 37 year is still a better match-up for the submission artist Charles Oliveira. Michael Chandler has so far only 2 wins to his resume in the UFC, and if he pulls out a victory at UFC 309 against the former champ, then it will establish himself on the top contenders’ list, and he believes that he is going to put on a masterful performance at UFC 309.
“I believe it’s going to be the most masterful performance that anybody has ever seen out of me, and it took me 15 years, almost 16 years to really put it together… I’ve got no worries at all about quote, unquote ring rust. I was born for this, I was built for this.”
