India’s Hopes Dented As Mridul Saikia Lost To China’s Agulali

Mridul Saikia vs Agulali

At Road To UFC season 4, India’s flyweight, Mridul Saikia, got his maiden professional defeat against China’s Agulali. Coming into the fight, “The Crusher” had a perfect 8 finishes. Surprisingly, he was an underdog to win against the Chinese striker. The bell rang, and China’s Agulali came guns blazing towards Mridul. Both exchanged heavy leather, and the Chinese fighter in the close pocket hit a great punch to rock India’s flyweight. Mridul, though, tried to stand and bang. He found himself on the mat with a few follow-up punches, and the referee intervened to stop the fight as China’s Agulali won via Knockout.

Unfortunately, India doesn’t have any other fighter in the current season who they could bank on after Mridul Saikia. The only Indian fighter who landed a contract through Road to UFC was Anshul Jubli. After that, MMA fighters from India tried getting the UFC contract from the event but failed to do so. In fact, last year, India’s Angad Bisht reached the semi-finals but lost to South Korea’s Dong Hun Choi.

Only two Indian fighters, Anshul Jubli and Puja Tomar, are active on the UFC roster. India’s Anshul Jubli has lost two consecutive fights in the UFC, where Puja Tomar became the first Indian fighter to register a victory in the Octagon and almost got another in her latest fight until Shauna Bannon reversed the momentum to lock an armbar on Puja Tomar. Eventually, the Indian fighter tapped and lost the bout.

Though the Indian fighters are not doing that great on an international level as of now, the number of fighters India has produced in recent years is worth noting, and it will not take much time for the young blood to rise in the MMA scene around the world.
